Joel Neely’s Tiger-Rock Martial Arts Academy
I have studied Taekwondo and other Korean and Japanese martial arts for over 40 years and have been professionally teaching them for over 35 years. I began training in October 1981 in Gulfport, Mississippi under Master Don Swift. After earning my 1st Degree Black Belt in June of 1984 I began teaching in his school in Gulfport. In May of 1985 I moved to Baton Rouge and opened my own school. I have worked hard to develop a significant presence in the Baton Rouge area and have trained thousands of students in the art of Taekwondo. I have watched thousands of youngsters develop confidence and real leadership skills at my academy and throughout the Tiger Rock community. I have been rewarded by hundreds of adults who have lost weight, gained confidence and learned self-defense skills. I have enjoyed the success that comes from hard work and dedication to principles. I look forward to continuing my Taekwondo training and teaching for many years.

Bring my 6 years old son here for summer session and he love it here, the instructor seem to work really well with kids, I can also see drastic different in discipline in kids within a week or two. Not easy task for twenty to thirty 4 to 6 years old kids

Excellent training. My daughter goes here and Mr Darron and the other instructors are incredible. What’s great is it’s not just martial arts training it’s also structured so the kids understand discipline and focus and sticking with something until you get better. JM Modern is absolutely fantastic. I started bjj about a year ago and have been super happy with the great professors and help from my fellow students in learning the sport. Absolutely would and have recommended this place to folks who want to learn self defense, get some exercise, or just straight up want to go toe to toe for friendly competition! 10/10, 5 stars!!

My wife and I travel for work, and are temporary residents at each location. We stay up to 6 months, but could leave as early as 8 weeks.I’m always on the hunt for the best quality Jiu Jitsu gyms but more specifically, the ones I will learn the most from.My research starts with asking my current Professor or coaches which gym they’d prefer going to, ( most of the time they follow the lineage and aim from there). Then, I ask the BJJ community which gyms they’ve been too or frequently go to in the area, and I find out who the instructors and google/ YouTube to see their accomplishments, matches, etc. After all is said and done, I take a free trial class to immerse myself in the action. If they don’t treat me like a potential sale, GOLD STAR. I check the cleanliness of the gym, if it’s to my standards or better, GOLD STAR. Then, me being me, I ask a lot of questions my first day, and try to shake hands with the higher ranks and just be myself, and if majority of everyone is friendly and smiles, another GOLD STAR.
At the point that all of these steps are taken in the order I listed them and I see no red flags, I will gladly spend whatever it takes to be a member at the gym!
JM MODERN IS THAT GYM IN THE BATON ROUGE AREA! HIGHLY RECOMMEND, EVEN IF ITS JUST TO STOP IN FOR A CLASS OR TWO. DONT LEAVE LOUISIANA WITHOUT STOPPING HERE FIRST!

There’s something here for everybody. Whether if you’re just looking to get in shape or train up to get in the ring. Nothing but tried and true old school, no BS, training going on in this great place. Everybody is there to support each-other to become the best that they can be. If you can’t stay motivated and pumped up during classes here, then I don’t know what to tell you. This place will always be my home gym no matter where I go.

As a homeschool mom of an ASD boy with inattentive ADHD, it is hard to find physical activities that keep his attention and keep him active. . After basketball, baseball, and flag football… And various other extracurriculars … He is excited and ASKS to go to classes with his coaches!! Sad truth of the matter is, there are bad people in the world that could easily take advantage of him. I am so glad I took the risk in signing him up for Jiu Jitsu. I honestly didn’t know if he would take to the physicality. Coaches are all patient with him… Even when his attention wanes.
